Calle and Mura

Here is the photo I took in San Miguel Allende in July 2010 when visiting my dear friend, Nettie. I just stopped on the street fascinated by the geometry of how the colors of different walls and a window came together. Just a snapshot and I ended up making a painting Mura ( Wall) that is a pretty literal transcription, with a few painterly flourishes, of what I saw that day.

Here are three of the paintings that are part of Sextet. The last one on the far right is called Calle. Look below for the paper collages that referenced a photo and became the painting, Calle.( Street).

Sextet is made of of (6) 14" high by 11" wide paintings on 1.5" deep canvases. It is based on streets in Mexico and the color of houses and walls. One of the paintings, is titled Blanca and it is a doorway on a street in San Miguel Allende. I photographed it and inspired by the colors I created a small paper collage. In my collage the gray concrete next to the door became white so I titled it Blanca. Here is the painting of Blanca, the photo and the collage.
I am installing Sextet in an order I fancy in the Ice Breakers show but I think it is only one of many possible ways to display the paintings, which could each stand alone too. I like the idea that someone could buy a few and create their own installation.

Mr. Still Creates His Museum

Beneath the elegant and cool exterior of the new Clyfford Still Museum designed by Brad Cloepfil beats the heart of an artist of turbulent and extraordinary control. Thirty-one years after his death his complete oeuvre is present in Denver Colorado, a city he probably never visited in his life. The story about the museum is controversial and well documented elsewhere. It is the reality of the art and the museum I want to discuss.
The building is close to perfection- a simple and elegant structure in which the art takes center stage. The details, particularly the concrete walls that allow the wood forms to be expressed are lovely. Natural light enhances the artificial and benches strategically placed in front of major paintings are a welcome element.
I have seen Still's work in other museums; notably the Metropolitan & MOMA in NY and the San Francisco Art Museum. Seeing it as he wished it displayed, without other artists' work, creates an experience that brings to mind the Rothko Chapel in Houston. The installation is quite traditional, sequencing from his early student work to the final works in the 1970s. The first floor has various artifacts ( paints, a baseball glove (?) and other memorabilia which seems less than important. Last month the Denver International Film Festival offered a series of films about the Abstract Expressionists, which I think would have been a good addition to the museum. Whether that would have fit within the stringent requirements of the artist's will, which determined much of the form of the museum, I don't know. Suffice to say that though it is legally a separate museum it's location next to the Denver Art Museum, ( and the security guards inside who were clearly from the Denver Art Museum) as well as a path leading from the front door of the Still Museum to the outdoor patio of the DAM coffee shop suggest a close relationship. Still's will required no restaurant inside the museum, or more critically, that no other artist's work be shown there.

So the work will be seen, in its magnificence, and it is wonderful work, but without the sorely need context of what was going on in the period it was created. A pity, I think. Nevertheless I am exceedingly grateful for the opportunity to see such wonderful paintings in such a comfortable setting.

Prospect II New orleans

Yes, it was smaller than last time, 26 artists versus 80+ in 2008. But it is still New Orleans and some memorable art and experiences at the best American biennial. I loved the Sophie Calle intervention at the 1850 House and was lucky to catch both the riveting Joyce Scott performance, Miss Veronica's Veil and the start of William Pope L.'s piece, Blink in the Lower 9th Ward. images top to bottom: Joans Dahlberg video Macbeth, william Pope.L. and me at the Sophie Calle installation.

Joan Mitchell Lady Painter by Patricia Albers

Last year I read the big DeKooning biography and the similarities of their lives is inescapable. Both painted big,bold expressive canvases and both were in NY in the 1950s and 60s. Both mingled at the Cedar bar with other artists, musicians, poets and writers of the era. Both drank much, much too much but still managed to create sublime paintings and have successful careers.
And how many more of us recognize the name Willem DeKooning and saw his work in their art history texts then know the name Joan Mitchell?
I was fortunate to see the big Mitchell retrospective at the Whitney in 2002. I went with a friend who is not big on contemporary art. We both were absolutely blown away by the sheer power and beauty of her work. I am a generation younger than Joan Mitchell,and a painter who has worked in the art world since the 1970s. I certainly knew who Joan Mitchell was and had seen her work occasionally at museums or exhibits.I think I, like many other accepted the generally held description of her as a "second generation abstract expressionist" which clearly meant that she was 2nd tier. In the 70s and 80s with the growth of the feminist movement in art her work was "rediscovered" as museums sought to include women artists in exhibits and collections. Joan was certainly uneasy with this, as the author describes in the book.
This is one of the best written biographies of an artist I have read. It reads like a novel, yet it is carefully documented and footnoted. I might quibble that the author often relied on one source who may have been biased, in some of her facts, but the strength of the book is its power in describing Joan life and her times. I was lucky to have the catalog from the exhibit so i could see many of the paintings. As always with artist bios, seeing the work described is very important and frustrating if it isn't available. Will publisher's start using the power of the internet to provide links to images and will the Kindle get some color so we can read books and see the artwork? Stay tuned...

Why I like abstraction

I don't know if abstraction is the best word for it but I paint in a form that isn't necessarily true to what we see in the natural or built world. I find it interesting after more than a century of non objective painting, people still struggle with art that doesn't look like something they recognize. While my paintings are based on all that I see and experience i choose to allow the viewer to make whatever connections he or she wishes. Once you put a chair, a flower or anything else too recognizable in the painting you are leading the viewer into a rather specific direction. What I love about non objective or abstract art is the journey it takes me on, where I can see things that connect to my experience. And in really good art it makes subtle or not so subtle changes each time a I see it. So titles are problematic and a distinct challenge. This painting is titled, Good Morning...

Month of Photography in Denver

Accolades to Mark Sink for organizing the Month of Photography. We were out of town in early March so missed the openings of many of the shows. We went out Sunday afternoon to catch two: the closing day of exhibit at Edge and the two shows at RedLine. The impact of all this photography on exhibit is marvelous- it certainly affirms how diverse the medium is and how pretty limitless it can be a art medium. Traditionally Unconventional is the show at Edge curated by Jessica Ellis and John Davenport with work by Susan Goldstein, Carol Golemboski, Kristen Hatgi, Davis Kaleda, Jocelyn Nevel, Christopher R. Perez, John Rodden, Rett Rogers, David Sharpe, Sarah Timberlake, David Seiler, Keiren Valentine, Michele Wysocki, David Zimmer. Lots of good stuff. I particularly liked Susan Goldstein's small mixed media prints. They demand a close up look- I wish I knew how she does it.
The two shows at RedLine are up till April 26th. The Alternatives Processes exhibit includes an array of early techniques like Daguerrtypes, tintypes, platinum prints,and all kinds of wonderful processes. As beautiful as the results are I was rather disappointed that the imagery was so reflective of historic work. It was a bit deja vu and led me to wonder how more contemporary images would look like using these processes.

The larger show is an exhibit from Houston's FotoFest as well as a smaller exhibit of work Mark found on line and locally. Both are knock down terrific exhibits- we spent lots of time there and I want to return. Some highlights were Andy Freeberg's( see above) large prints showing the reception desks of Chelsea galleries. It says all that needs to be said about the clubby, unfriendly atmosphere of high end galleries. I loved Viviane Le Courtois' video of peeling potatoes ( Ok, you gotta see it) Emma Livingston's luscious photos of Argentina and Ion Zupcu's black and white prints of cubes.

last day to see the Dale Chisman retrospective at RedLine in Denver. I spent time there this week surrounded by his beautiful canvases. Abstraction lives in his inventive work. He was a treasured teacher at the Art Students League of Denver and his work lives on in the many students who have benefited from his vision.

The Nature of Things: Denver Biennial

24 artists, architects and designers from the Americas have work in the central exhibition at the Biennial of the Americas which closes at the end of the month. While there are some terrific pieces in the show,I confess that the star is the McNichols building itself. The former Carnegie library, situated on a prime corner of downtown's Civic Center park, has been the phantom of the park. There, but not there, present but absent. For the past decade it was the offices for city workers, apparently divided into a rabbit warren of cubicles, cheap carpeting and dropped ceilings circa 1960. Now, stripped down to its bare bones, it is a ravishing beauty with drop dead views of the park and surrounding civic buildings. The exhibit takes full advantage of the open spaces and offers tantalizing glimpses of its past, in areas with fragments of beautiful tiled floors areas.
The exhibit has a tendency towards the didactic, not surprising since the curator,Paola Santoscoy is a recent Cal Arts Grad student. However, there are beauties too; most memorably Pedro Reyes use of confiscated firearms remade into shovels to plant trees. There are some great videos and a compelling piece by Clark Richert.
Unfortunately, the Biennial, which many felt was rushed and given insufficient planning time, was crammed into one month. Certainly an exhibit such as this deserves a decent run. The Nature of Things comes down at the end of July so if you want to see it and enjoy a peek inside the phantom of the park, come down to Civic Center this week.

I read the obituary in the NY Times this morning and was struck by this sentence:
"Though he exhibited in some of the most eminent galleries of his time, his style fell out of favor".
I enjoyed his work and know it will "come back" at some point in the future. When did art become so fixated on the market that galleries could no longer find a place for talented artists they had once believed in? I doubt it was because his work changed but because styles change and the fancies of curators change for what is " hot". Anyway, it is a good time to remember a good artist and revisit his work.

I have spent 2 days at the Denver Botanic Gardens enjoying the marvelous Henry Moore sculpture exhibit. It is up till next January so I look forward to seeing them as the seasons change. It is early spring now so I was most interested in drawing the trees, before the leaves obscure their structure. I love charcoal and still have a box from my college days in the 1960s. How times have changed; I don't imagine any charcoal is still produced in NY or LA do you?

Collectors fulfill the loop- artists make art, sometimes someone sells it and the collector buys it. Without collectors where would artists be? A new film fondly portrays two of the more unusual collectors- Herb and Dorothy Vogel in Herb and Dorothy, playing this week at Startz in Denver. I had the pleasure to meet them years ago and took them to galleries in Denver. And yes, they did buy something. Here is a good review.

DeKooning American Master

I finished this 600 + page book this week and have been participating in a Twitter book club reading it. The Twitter experience was novel- the 160 character limit to posts certainly kept long winded discourse to a minimum.
The book is extraordinary and I recommend it to anyone. For artists, it is an insightful look into the art and life of a seminal painter written by two critics who offer penetrating analysis of his painting. For others, it provides a wonderful introduction to the development of abstract expressionism which brought the US to the forefront of painting. It reads like a novel. I expected it to be a slog but I tore through it in a week. If you want to read some of the comments on Twitter check out #dekooning on the subject line.

Summer art market

I did my first outdoor art market this weekend and loved the experience, except the tornado. Actually, a funnel cloud sighting shut the market down 1 hour early, but luckily no tornado.
It was fun to meet people and many artists stopped by to look at and comment on my work. I love the feedback and love the fact that some people bought paintings. the whole experience is so much friendlier than galleries. Some new collectors purchased work and a second piece from a collector who bought one 2 years ago. It sure makes you feel good- I have one more event this week and we have another houseguest at the end of the week, but I will get back to the studio and painting pronto, I hope...

My painting reflect an important time in my life; one year of study at the Academy of Fine Arts, Rome and the University of Rome. The development of perspective during the Renaissance in Italy, particularly the work of the Quattrocento artists, Brunelleschi and Masaccio has always interested me. I find that the imperfections of the perspective in early Renaissance work compelling because it reflects the humanity in the work, the touch of the hand as opposed to the rigid formality of linear perspective that can drain the life from a painting. My paintings also reflect my interest in the geometry I see in indigenous architecture, particularly in small villages in Mexico and Italy.

Since that early experience in Rome, four decades ago, I have been immersed in contemporary art. Only in the past few years have I found a way to merge both interests into my paintings. By eliminating most natural forms, nature and the human figure, I have tried to humanize architecture and allow color and perspective to create dynamic compositions. I believe they have a life of their own.

The Internet offers great opportunities for arts coverage but the central issue of how to pay writers and critics remains. I spent 5 years struggling to make a living as an itinerant critic/writer and it wasn't easy. I was paid as little as $25 an article at some places. Magazines paid better and adding adjunct teaching gigs and other things barely brought in an income of below poverty level. However, artists need arts writers, not just to publicize exhibitions but to offer discussion, analysis and commentary. We don't always like what they write, but imagine the echoing silence of no arts commentary...

Everybody Loves a Trainwreck Exhibition

I am thrilled with the work artists did for the show I co-curated with Alison Werasmith. The show will at the Art Students League of Denver January 9-February 25. In addition, the artist's work will be projected as part of the Stories on Stage performances at the Denver Performing Arts Complex, January 15th and 16th.

Titles are funny- I have a hard time with them. But as I continue on this group of paintings I am realizing that the series is about place. whether it is Mexico, Italy or Colorado, each painting is about something I have seen and has been imprinted on my memory. The series is a catalog of sorts, hence my desire to display it as a group. It is more than a list and close to a snapshot; a reminder of my experience of a moment and the mysteries of a particular place. No people, no nature, just the man-made buildings and streets.

Does the top one look familiar? it is a larger version of Quiet. This is Quiet Too
the middle one is Anticipation and the bottom one is Pentimento. Perhaps they are all a homage to this month to quote Dickens, " the best of times, the worst of times" a time of anticipation, dread and a heartfelt desire to have this election over so we can get on with our lives. Of course that will depend on it going the way we wish to hope and change via Barack Obama.

I finished Portrait( middle image) today. I discovered it had affinities with 2 others- all based on Guanajuato. I looked at 9 together and am exploring how the painting work together in different groupings.

status

I am now exactly half way through my new series; ten paintings completed and ten to go. I hope to complete the series by the end of the year. They really look good together- right now I am positioning them 4 across and three down which makes a single piece that is 60" x 80". I am calling it the Hill Town Series- the inspirations comes from my time in Oaxaca and Guanajuata as well as Italy. I wouldn't necessarily describe Rome,Denver or San Patricio, Mexico as hill towns, but each place has been part of the inspiration for the series. By the time I complete painting number 20 I believe the title for the series will reveal itself.

see the article below from today's NY times which explains how investors are using the art market in ways that undermine museums and serious collectors. The art market has always been based in 19th century traditions of trust. Obviously that is now over.

New painting

I wanted to move away from traditional watercolor paper and found this beautiful handmade paper. I used the back, which has no sizing, so it absorbed a ridiculous amount of paint. Since I was moving away from some of the constraints of traditional watercolor technique, I added white and black which really made it pop.
